Following the bashing of two surf lifesavers by men of Middle Eastern origin the previous weekend an estimated 5000 people flocked to the beachside suburb of Cronulla in Sydney’s South on Sunday 11 December 2005 for what was dubbed by its pioneers ‘Leb and Wog bashing day’. The day began with what could easily have been mistaken for an Australia Day street party but quickly descended into a maelstrom of racially motivated, alcohol fuelled mob violence as men and women of Middle Eastern appearance were set upon during what became known as the Cronulla Riots
